Biomass-Fired Power Plants

Luft Filtre delivers consistent, reliable, and high-performance filtration solutions — even under the most challenging process conditions.

Biomass-fired boilers present complex and demanding filtration challenges due to factors such as variable fuel characteristics (wood chips, olive pits, waste paper, animal residues, agricultural by-products, etc.), high moisture content, acidic gas emissions, and heavy ash loads. Ensuring efficient operation of filtration systems is critical to maintaining boiler efficiency and complying with environmental regulations, making careful selection of filter bags essential.

In biomass boiler systems, dust collection systems are actively employed at multiple points, including boiler outlet gas lines, ash handling systems, flue gas cleaning units, and general de-dusting systems. Depending on the fuel type, gas composition and particulate characteristics can vary significantly, requiring a process-oriented approach when selecting filter bags.

Filtration Applications in Biomass Boilers

Boiler Outlet Filters:
Temperatures typically range between 140–200°C, but depending on the type of biomass used, the flue gas may contain acidic gases (SO₂, HCl), volatile potassium, and chlorine compounds. For these conditions, PPS (Ryton), PTFE-coated PPS, glass fiber, or PTFE filter bags are recommended. P84-based bags are also suitable for abrasive ash content and thermal fluctuations.

High-Chlorine Biomass (e.g., poultry manure, olive pits):
Due to chemical attack from chlorine, alkali metals, and organic acids, PTFE membrane-coated glass fiber filter bags are preferred. This material offers low gas leakage and high chemical resistance.

Ash Handling and Silo Filters:
For environments with abrasive ash particles, polyester or aramid-based filter bags are chosen for durability and mechanical strength. If the ash is moist, hydrophobic-treated fabrics are recommended.

Gas Cooling and Treatment Units (Pre-Scrubber):
In moist and acidic conditions, PTFE membrane or coated bags play a critical role in chemical resistance. In these areas, it is essential that the bag remains impermeable to moisture and maintains its shape.

General Dust Collection:
Moderate dust control is required in material handling, feeding, drying, and blending areas. In these zones, surface-treated polyester bags provide an economical and efficient solution. For environments with explosion risk, antistatic fabrics should be used.

Our Experience in Biomass and Coal-Fired Boilers

Luft Filtre provides high-performance filter bags designed to handle the challenging conditions commonly encountered in biomass and coal-fired boiler systems, including high dust loads, variable moisture levels, temperature fluctuations, and abrasive ash content.

We perform custom analyses based on the boiler type, fuel characteristics, and combustion data to optimize the fiber structure, surface coating (ePTFE, silicone, oil- and water-repellent, etc.), and support equipment of the filter bags.

By selecting materials with the appropriate chemical resistance according to the flue gas composition at the combustion chamber outlet, we prevent bag clogging, reduce fan load, and lower energy consumption.

With pre-installation analysis, supervised installation, post-commissioning performance monitoring, and periodic maintenance services, we ensure the continuous operation of your system.

In these demanding processes, Luft Filtre is your reliable partner, delivering both environmental compliance and economical operational performance.
